Effects of Stress |
||
|
Stress can kill you or worse yet... It causes deterioration in everything, from your gums to your heart and can make you more susceptible to everything from the common cold to cancer. The body’s reaction to stress is the “Fight or Flight” response. The body releases more hormones which causes the body to gear up for any perceived threat or danger by fighting or running away. Cortisol is one of those hormones. Cortisol has been considered one of the main culprits in the stress-illness connection. It plays a necessary role in helping us cope with threats by boosting the heart rate, increasing respiration, and enabling the “flight or fight” reaction. This takes a lot of energy which causes the body to shut down other vital functions such as digestion, reproduction, physical growth, and some aspects of the immune system. The body’s response to stress is meant to activate the alarm system to deal with the stress then return to a normal level (within 40-60 minutes). When we live in constant levels of stress it wears out the bodily systems. It can cause many health problems like high blood pressure, heart attack, and even stroke. Just "living with it" is not the answer... Too much stress changes the brain to perceive more danger even when it is not really there. It begins a vicious cycle. Stress is one of the biggest factors leading to depression. Then, in turn, depression creates more stress. Taking action is imperative! |
